Students and Parents Revolt Against New Electronic Monitoring Device Used by Texas Schools

Students and teachers are revolting against a decision to make students where electronic ID badges so that administrators can keep up with them at all times.  The Radio Frequency Identification System, or RFID, is causing an outrage among those in the community, as well as civil liberties advocates, who are calling it an invasion of privacy.

The school says that the new system keeps students safe.  John Jay High School and Anson Jones Middle School are the places where the new system is going to be implemented.  RFID tags also allow for more accurate attendance by counting students as soon as they enter the building.

District spokesman Pasqual Gonzalez says that these schools have been selected due to a high rate of truancy.   If they improve attendance at the schools, administrators say they will receive an extra $2 million in state funding.  The new system is expected to be implemented in September.

One parent, Stephen Hernandez, says that the ID tags are nothing more than spy chips.   Another parent, Katie Deolloz agrees and is joining the fight against them

Dr. Katherine Albrecht, co-authored a book speaking out against RFID.  She is supporting Hernandez and the other parents fighting the measure.

“NISD is a school district and not a government,” Hernandez said.

  2. Parents have never been as stupid as education bureaucrats want us to be. We know schools are always experimenting on and with our children; often with disastrous results when we don’t remain engaged and vigilant about reeling in trendy nonsense and corporate exploitation that usually has nothing to do with learning.
