It appears that the study conducted by New Economics Foundation (NEF) that says there is nothing natural or inevitable about what’s considered a “normal” 40-hour work week today is accurate. In its wake, many people are caught in a vicious cycle of work and consumption. They live to work, work to earn, and earn to consume things. Missing from that equation is an important fact that researchers have discovered about most material consumption in wealthy societies: so much of the pleasure and satisfaction we gain from buying is temporary, ephemeral, and mostly just relative to those around us (who strive to consume still more, in a self-perpetuating spiral). Another study shows that working overtime is life threatening.

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, shows that a combination of stress, raised blood pressure and unhealthy diets stemming from long working hours may be the cause of thousands of workers’ serious health problems.

The study combined the results of different studies over the last 50 years and found that spending too long in the office resulted in a 40 to 80 percent greater chance of heart disease compared to an eight hour work day. The latest findings discovered by scientists at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health support results from a 2011 British survey that revealed that doing more than 11 hours of work a day raised heart disease risks by 67 percent.

Lead researcher Dr. Marianna Virtanen and her team gathered data from 12 different studies going back to 1958, when researchers first suggested that working long hours could be linked to poor heart health. In total, the studies involved more than 22,000 participants, from Britain, the USA, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. “There are several potential mechanisms that may underlie the association between long working hours and heart disease,” study authors wrote. ”One is prolonged exposure to psychological stress.” Researchers said that other factors could be increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, poor eating habits and lack of physical activity due to limited leisure time. Bottom line:  ask yourself if those extra hours in the office everyday are really worth it, or if they’re doing you more long-term harm than good. -Source

  1. I work 2 jobs 16 hours per day plus and 2 total hours getting ready for work and travel. That 18 hours a day 7 days a week for work with only 6 hours for eat, sleep and thats it. Am I at risk?

  2. No time for family, no time 2 enjoy the fruits of ur labor, the more u make the more u spend the more u have 2 work bc u want more, u want bigger, u want better and u want 2 keep up with others who have more than u so u can brag and boast abt what u have, this u’ll do and DIE trying…….I myself rather have an easy life the reason why I do the residual income online MLM business. I enjoy my modest lifestyle, not trying to have it all therefore(God willing)I’ll live longer, and keep the stress levels low as possible . Life is 2 short 2 try and become a Trump, Gates, or Zukenberg (sp) Being me with a lot less, a very wealthy life and healthy mind suits me just fine………LOL

  3. A COMPANY THAT IS CUTTING PEOPLES LIVES SHORT IS WELLS FARGO. SO MANY FOLKS ON HOURLY PAY HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF AND MADE SALARY EXCEMPT AND THEIR WORK LOAD HAS ALL OF A SUDDEN GONE TO APP 57 TP 61 HOURS PER WEEK, WITH MANY OF THESE HAVING TO BE PUT IN ON SATURDAY AND OR SUNDAY. THE COMPANY ESPICALLY IN THE CAROLINAS IS RULING BY IMINDIATION OF THE EMPLOYEE. JUST GO UNDER COVER AND BEGIN TO TALK TO WORKERS AND THE BUSINESS WHERE THE EMPLOYEE GOES–DOCTORS, RESTAURANT, MINISITERS, SHOPPING MALLS AND ETC. I WILL BE GLAD TO BE INVOLVED IF YOU CONTACT ME.

  4. This article is some what misleading in it’s characterization as to why people work the over time they do. This aurthor would have us to believe people work overtime to simply buy stuff however there is another reason people work long hours and that is the low wages that have taken over many blue collar jobs. Most cooperations employee workers at very low wages in jobs that can only be described as sweat shops. These companies have bought all three branches of Gov. and they have little to fear from the mainstream media because they own it. Today we live under facist rule and Obama is nothing but a figure head for cooperation rule.
