Elementary school science fairs are often fun ways of having children learn about complex scientific principles through simple projects. You usually expect to see projects such as volcanoes, light bulbs being powered by pickles and comparisons of household cleaning products.
One ambitious student in Miami, FL, took the science fair to a level that has rarely (if ever) been seen before. Emma Bartelt conducted an experiment in which she used three drug sniffing dogs and 28 grams of real cocaine. “The purpose for this scientific investigation was to find which dog would find the cocaine fastest using it’s [sic] sense of smell,” stated young Emma. Her father, Douglas Bartelt, who is a detective with the Miami-Dade Police Narcotics Bureau, provided the drugs and the dogs to her.
According to Emma’s mother, Michelle Bartelt, Emma “did not touch the cocaine.” She further added, “[Doug] handled the drugs. “He’s always very meticulous about how he handles drugs.” John Schuster, a spokesman for the school district, released a statement to answer any concerns that might have been raised by such an unusual choice of experiment, “The student’s science project involved a very unusual set of circumstances, including having a parent who is a well-respected police detective with experience in training dogs that sniff for illegal substances. From our understanding, the parent was the only person involved in working directly with the dogs and the hidden substances, which took place at a police training facility.”
It comes as no surprise that Emma won first place in the school’s science fair.
I don’t think she shoudl have won first place. From what I read the student did not really do the project her dad did.. The other kids probably had hands on experience with their projects. No I don’t think it was fair to the others..

I don’t think she should have won first prize at all, I do not see anything wrong with the demonstration of drug sniffing dogs but it should have been done as a field trip for the whole class period. A science project is something for the kid to develope and create on their own with their own imagination. Daddy helped out way too much on this project. their is no way she deserved first place. Unless the rules state that your parents can pretty much be totally involved in your science project. Kids need to know how the police handle drug offensess and what will happen to them if they get involved in drug use, drug sales, drug trafficketing, etc., but that should have been a volunteer thing totally separte from the science project if her family wanted to be that much involved it made it impossible for the other kids to win! Totally unfair!

What exactly was the experiment? What dog would find the drugs the fastest using its sense of smell? Based on what? Breed? Age? Size? Amount of time in the narcotics division? What was her hypothesis? Was she right or wrong? What was the outcome of the experiment? I want more details besides the real cocaine aspect. I get it.. drugs..oooh…bad. now can get some uhhhh story? Maybe the experiment as a whole is why she placed first.

The question is, why did the have access to the evidence removed from suspect(s). Is it legal for a police officer to remove control substances from inventory, at all? Even though, the article says that the child did handle the cocaine, this drug should have not been a part of the equation. The least action should have been suspension, investigated.

Hmmm, so she won first prize. I wonder if father and daughter celebrated their win with a hit off that coke? You never know.

Now how is this acceptable but another child conducts a science experiment in a controlled environment, but gets charged with a felony AND being charged as an adult because the experiment went wrong. Although no one was injured, no property is damaged and the school officials knew she had no malicious intent, she’s still being punished. But little miss thing and her officer daddy can use police dogs and real cocaine as a “science experiment”. That’s complete and total bullsh** in my opinion. She should have stuck with making a solar system or volcano like normal kids. Smdh

Here we go with the double standards again…So I guess the zero tolerance of drugs on school property is fine as long as your parent is a cop?!! yet the other child whose experiment went wrong causing an explosion on school grounds is condemned and charged with a felony act. If the child with ILLEGAL DRUGS isnt punished for this its our fault……WEVE GOT TO MAKE SOME NOISE for these injustices….WERE ALL OUR CHILDREN HAVEand I agree THIS IS TOTAL BULLS**T!
