Tech Companies Just Aren’t That Into Black People
If you follow tech, then you are familiar with the parade of pictures tech companies post online. Most are snapshots of a new product,
service, or just a fun Instagram of the company’s team, and by team, I mean young enthusiastic white men.
It’s not that tech companies don’t hire minorities. They do. The occasional Indian-American or Asian-American shows up in most tech team pics, but where are the black people? That’s one of the questions CNNMoney is asking after a probe of 20 of the most influential tech companies in America.
A probe of companies — including such high profile names Apple, Google, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Microsoft –seemingly sought to actively conceal their diversity numbers from CNN. The only diversity data provided was from five companies: Cisco, Dell, eBay, Ingram Micro, and Intel.
CNN still found that minorities and women were underrepresented in management roles at tech companies.
“Our investigation demonstrated how difficult — and sometimes impossible — gaining any insight into Silicon Valley’s employee diversity can be,” CNN’s Julianne Pepitone writes. “It shows a general lack of transparency in an industry known for its openness.”
There is only an incentive to provide diversity data if you’re proud of your diversity record.
CNN even reached out to the Equal Opportunity Commission for help in forcing the tech companies to come forward, but quickly learned this was a dead end since the only private companies the EEOC oversees are federal contractors.
In the end, most of the tech companies kept their data private, and that was probably for a good reason.

Silicon Valley only hire foreigners who then hire their own kind. People who grew up in silcon valley before it was silicon valley. Realistically very few of us are into the high science and math necessary to be hired!
If you want to guarantee your child an excellent paying and rewarding job, make them a computer nerd, by the time they are 25 they will be taking care of you!
The reason all of the techy are from India, and the far east is because they are much more serious about education! We still go to school to be social workers!
Your child can be employed out of high school if they have the right background, that does not mean singing and dancing, or basketball. It’s all up to you! I can’t believe we don’t know these things it’s 2013 not 1975! The market for qualified people is world wide, and were still acting like we can go up to Detroit and get a job with GM!

We are not entitled to any jobs. Further there is nothing wrong with being a social worker. I for one trained in the social and psychological sciences and I am also a self taught software programmer. I use both skills to make a very good living in my profession.
What am I trying to write here?
Black people please abandon the socialism paradigm and educate yourself and your children to compete with the rest of the world. Stop looking to the government to solve your problems and look to each other.

Onesilverbac is right. I am an executive in a IT consulting company with 20+ years of experience. I now work work for a company that numbers about 1300 employees. At any one time, we have 100 openings. I worked for my previous employer for 15 years. That company numbered over 100K employees, and had thousands of openings! When I interview candidates, I get very fewer African American candidates. In fact, I get very few American applicants! The jobs are here NOW in science, techhology, engineering and match (STEM)! And if you can qualify for Top Secret clearance, you’ll never want for a job (I work in government, so no US citizenship, then no job). I tell my sons almost everyday. You’re going to study STEM. I have exposed them to science and technology, and they love it. Google the Hope Project in Washington, DC. Raymond Bell and his team are training HS graduates to get certifications and jobs in technology making $40K to start! India and Singapore have used computer technology to build a middle class. We can do the same here in the states. IJS.

As a Black female Scientist, I can tell you that the jobs may be in TEM, but they certainly are NOT in Science, especially in Metro DC. Competition for the few jobs there are is FIERCE, and many if not most of them, allow foreigners with visa’s to fill them and at lower pay.

Exactly PinkRose. Americans cannot compete without overcompensating for foreigns who have 3 year and 6 year in-house-arrest docile terms with their employers. Employers wants this option first before even considering americans.
What creates an added incentive to what I call the non-technical middle managers is that the foreigners come in and are willing to own every issue and fault with the organization’s technical health and work toward remediating it. This unknowingly lessens the value of these non-technical managers and before long they too are replaced and the cycle continues again at their level.
I’m not at all saying owning a role in an organization is bad. Its exactly what you should do to create value for yourself and the organizations. The problem is there have been too many non-technical middle managers in the generation who’ve given up their intimate connection with their organization’s innards in order to golf on the weekends and enjoy their family every evening – to the virtual exclusion of the workplace – that they have become covert targets of the foreigners on visa. But the outward stance of the foreigners is to be willing take all the heat and technical hands-on competance off of the manager manager so they can obliviously enjoy their lives because they deserve it. They actually might, but today you have to have skin in the game.

Among us, there are people who are saying yes to poverty. It is seldom that I see Blacks read a book or the newspaper when I am in the bus or the subway. There are many ignorant White people out there but what some of our people refuse to understand or admit is the system favors WASPs not us so, we don’t have a choice to be highly educated. I grew up in a family like the Cosby Show. There is not one day in my life that I didn’t see my father read the newspaper. He knew what to do to have one of the top jobs in America. My late father was one of the top physicians in North America. It is time for us to wake up and smell the coffee!!!

I was a grown man before I saw my father read anything.
When I was twelve he gave me the instructions to his new LED clock and told me to read it and set the alarm for 5:50am. The instructions where only in french, so he definitely valued the importance of reading but he undervalued doing it regularly and setting an example.

To use social workers as an example is of poor choice; that particular service is needed; especially when a many of Black Folk went to public schools. The public schools are primarily controlled by those who for the most part don’t live within that school neighborhood; which would be a very good indication of one not being as concerned of the success rate of that giving population. On the other hand, one maybe con earned of the test scores in their particular distric– whereby the state government will distribute adequate funding for education, and those who live off of it. Such foolishness for one to say– your child can be employed right out of high school— the INFERIOR EDUCATION that is being offered in our public schools- are producing what is obvious to the average two year old– NOTHING– but young Black and Brown Folk to occupy the prisons- in exchange for cheap labor, and to be passed over for a labor position for agents of American big and small businesses- illegal immigrants. Get your mind right– the substandard curriculum that are in place in our public schools are designed not to prepare not a darn soul to leave high school and work no where that will pay a decent living. Had that been the case the so called middle class wouldn’t be stressing about the rise of college tuitions. Today’s war on education is charter schools versus public schools; is no more of who controls those billions of dollars that are up for grabs. The thought of other people teaching Black children to be equipped with an equal education to compete with their children for a job throws me through a loop as well. The morale of the story is to control your own curriculum– which will in turn will control your community; as well as your economy.
The main issue is exposure– or should I say– Black Folk ought to be reintroduced to the sciences which we where the teachers of– before our seperation from self (enslavement–and integration), which will enable our children to be excellent in that particular field of science again.

We need skills in all jobs from ditch digger to computer programer
and beyond. An electrician, plumber, carpenter, auto mechanic,
road worker, teacher, engineer, doctor, dentist, to name a few
are all important. To have those skills require mastering the 3R’s
(reading, righting arithmatic). These educational skills are required as the basic for all jobs, including ditch diggers, because
today’s ditch diggers operate heavy equipment that are computerized.
We need to stop trying to force whitie or businesses to give us jobs. We need to increase our stock value through education, and when this happens someone will hire us or we will be smart enough to create our own jobs. Of course lets not forget work ethic and
hard work for without these education will be limited.

I’d have to agree with “Way”. Foreigners are cleaning our clocks with I.T. In another generation foreigners, possibly Indians, may be running this country. And not because they’re getting all the STEM jobs necessarily but, they are married by 30 sometimes have two stable incomes and stable families. This is creating wealth at disproportinate levels to other groups. That coupled with the observation that they almost exclusively hire themselves once they’re able to make hiring decisions means things are going to get even rockier for a lot of folks in tech.

I’m a Healthcare professional and my Godbrother and my significant other are also. Those science classes were not easy, yet I did see many women including black women in class with me, but not many black men. I have eaten good for a long time and have to turn down offers. If we could get black men to know how to learn the concepts of let’s say gross anatomy, then they can get a skill and eat well all their life also. Average starting pay for healthcare professional is 55,000. My Godbrother makes 210000,,and he is not a physician ..He is a CRNA … Hotep

Who cares if they’re not that in to Blacks! Since when have black people waited for America (or jobs in America) to be into them? It doesn’t work that way. Our entire history has been having to push through to get into most lucrative/important fields. This area is the future and where the future money will be. We need the few black sites, we have, to help by giving data on how to overcome these obstacles rather than exploiting them. This is what’s lacking. Black web sites and social media can give tons of negative useless info about what’s wrong. But is sorely lacking in enough information that will give blacks the knowledge we need to overcome the obstacles they love to publicize. How can black sites be used to network and help us find others who will challenge such companies? We need more articles like Dr. Boyce’s movement challenging what’s happening with today’s prisons. How about some more data like that??!!!

Techy Isn’t The Only Job In The Land
March 23, 2013 at 1:55 am
Excellent article it reflects serious complex concerns in terms of new business creations .To achieve new technology industries to be owned by Black people is the key here to true market diversity on a corporate level and which this can be done is where the jobs could naturally be provided locally within these cities across the country. We must return more to the concept of on- the- job- training for any technology transfer to take place within these so-called under-served or under-developed communities. etc. CHINA , INDIA , MEXICO & parts of Europa .We research & developed business plans for a solar manufacturing and wind generator plant with cost analysis and so on. So where we could create jobs with a targeted goal of seeing these technology settled directly within these communities but the major obstacle to develop the market within theses communities are the Banks , financing tools, and market advertisements to supports the existence of the alternative energy manufacturing plants alone with closing the gap for the Black leaders-ship who never understood the technological changes or even learn how to able to adapt to these new changes within their discussion in reaching out to those who know how to address real economic development issues meaning human labor is being displaced or in some case no longer needed within a transforming tech society and due to narrow mindedness on social discussion of issues then to maturely address a road map a CURE found within the social ills relating to an economically depressed community . And so to address social issues without provided the real Cure which is economics they maybe unable to understand how there exist a major economic benefits in terms of how energy cost impact every aspect found with any business community life relating to cost of operations where energy cost impacts every business bottom-line profits. so the new paradigm The Triple Bottom-line for Black People is in the understanding about the applications of technology in zero -time is KEY and the cost of how energy can have on developing a business can save money in-relationship to the applications of the technology can help a companies survival and create better competitive positioning within a global market.

Can you blame tech companies???? I am a scientist and I am love technology. I am normally the most “techy” person in the whole lab. Before me they were still doing things on paper and not computer. Trying to get most blacks out of the dark ages and to use technology is like pulling teeth from a tiger. Even in my own professional society people balked at the idea of having meeting via Skype or web chat.
On the flip side to this being a scientist is I work with lots of Asian and Hispanics that have a hard time accepting that a Black person can be as educated as they are or more. I had to go to HR because my boss was treating me poorly and allowing others to do the same.

“Can you blame tech companies???? ”
“Asian and Hispanics that have a hard time accepting that a Black person can be as educated as they are or more”
Chrystal: You just answered your own question. And I guess you can’t blame history for the plight of black people either? Also, if you didn’t have to go to HR, you wouldn’t be commenting on this article. Your co-workers are screwing with you, don’t you there because you are too damn smart…like most black people: YOU ARE A THREAT! Give it some time; you’ll be looking for another job.
As far as Asian and Hispanics, they need to get a clue; that’s how dumb they really are. Too many blacks have created many things in the world and still don’t get the recognition for what they have contributed to society. Therefore, no one wants to hear about what Asians and Hispanics narrow minded butts think. Asians cheat on exams and Hispanics get free passes on exams because of their, “so-called”, language barriers. Neither Asian nor Hispanics will hire a black person and that’s pathetic. Most believe the stereotypes about black people and more so, maintains the family the business. So maybe that’s what the Tech Companies are doing; they don’t want black people in their Techy Business.
For example: Asians write answers on paper, balls it up, and when the instructor isn’t looking, tosses it to his peers. American born Hispanics opts to take a two hour exam because they are bilingual when, American born English speaking people only gets 1-1/2 hours at no option. All the while, the bilingual speaker speaks better English than the American English speaker. It’s hard for most blacks and most whites to obtain bilingual speaking jobs even if they require no skills at all. But America’s primary language is supposed to be, “English”. There’s no harm in learning Spanish, right? Tell that to the Baby Boomers!
Why is this so significant? It’s significant because people are always talking about how smart Asians are and have better work ethics than blacks, yet they help each other cheat on exams. Hispanics play the game as well, when it benefits them even though they don’t need it. Blacks have to work harder to get by on their own merits; nothing wrong with that but blacks are looked at as lazy, uneducated and the whole nine yards. I know better than that. Most blacks, the ones who love themselves, know that too. If people can stop feeding into the stereotypes, they would be better people but people are so stuck on stupid, they tend to believe that which is not true about them. This is not solely directed to you, but I just wanted to get what I have witnessed out in the opening.
For one, I wouldn’t give a darn! Tech companies aren’t holding blacks hostage for any jobs. Whatever Tech companies can do, blacks can do just as good or better. Blacks can open their own tech business. There’s a multitude of jobs to be had for black people but in order to be employable, you must have the skills. If you don’t have the skills, acquire them. You do what you love doing and not what others say you should be doing. You must take care of yourselves. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
I don’t have anything against any race of people and I don’t know everything, but I do know what I have observed and learned by experience. To each his own, and that goes for everyone. Do what you love to do because in the end, you’re responsible for your own life.
My business will be opening soon. I plan on hiring a lot of black people.

Thank you— we are a people who built America from the bottom of its earth; today as we struggle to survive in this greedy society in which we live- I see there are those who still despise us as human beings– Asians and Hispanics are this and that– Black Folk are lazy/ yeah right Black Folk paved the way for them to be in the position their in- as far as not being treated as second class citizens in America (human n civil rights)– frankly speaking- Black Folk shook the tree and they ( Asians Hispanics) ran and picked up the apples and forgot who shook the tree. As you people who make such comments that I find to be derogatory about Black Folk; don’t forget a out how we put this racist america on stage to the world of how evil it is when it came to the inhumane treatment of Black (AA), and how the repercussion of that great moment of our stand against such evil-this is the systematic marginalization of Black Folk (AA) in America- despicable public education, the invasion of the so called illegals,Chinese, and all other people who are reaping the benefits of the struggle of Black Folk (AA)in America.
Peace to all Black Folk (AA) who love yourself

@”Techy Isn’t The Only”
You are so right. We gotta learn this stuff but we need to do it earlier. EVERY black teenager with a STEM aptitude should have a laptop. The internet is free. The linux operating system is free. There is FREE software for any imaginable labor segment that can run on linux. I saw software on youtube the other day for fashion design that runs as an add-on the GIMP (a free graphics image manipulation program). In it the youtubers was changing a virual models dress color and adding bra straps to the virtual model. (At youtube, enter search words gimp and model).
Folks its out there. If you have a kid, please, please, find your neighborhood geek or one at work and immerse the kid. There are way too many 6 and 7 figure incomes being unclaimed by blacks.

LOL! I’m overworked because I know too much. Not always a good thing to let people know that you know certain things. They take advantage of you, then those things become part of your job. I beg to differ.
Mostly all the people I work with does not hold a BS degree. Once they find out that I have one, their attitudes change towards me. This is especially noticeable in my supervisor. She can’t stand the fact that I have a degree in Computer Information Systems and refuses to let me help her when she has computer problems. I leave it alone. Only a few of my co-workers ask for help and the supervisor resents it. The manager doesn’t have a problem with it because anything I can do to help my co-workers, the less she has to do to call an IT person, besides, it makes me feel good that I can oblige. Besides, I put information like that on my resume. But I’m not looking for an IT job; I’m looking to open my own business.
Thus, I know why Tech Companies don’t want to hire blacks; BLACKS ARE A THREAT to IT and there’s more of us out there and they know it.
Keep smiling
