In science class, you probably learned that a woman can only get pregnant by one man at once. That’s typically true, but if a woman is sleeping with more than one man at one time, things can sometimes happen in ways you might not expect.
The case of Mia Washington was national news after it was reported that the woman was impregnated by two men at once. Even more interesting is that the babies were twins. Yes, you got that right: Twins with two different dads.
According to The Today Show, the woman’s ovaries released two eggs to be fertilized instead of just one. So, after sleeping with her 44-year old boyfriend, the 20-year old woman unknowingly got pregnant by another man in the same week.
According to Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University, sperm can stay alive for up to five days in the reproductive tract. So, the sp*erm can, “just kind of hang out there waiting for the egg to be released,” according to Dr. Hutcherson.
The situation began to unravel when her 44-year old partner, James Harrison, couldn’t understand why the second baby looked so much different from the first.
These outcomes are one in a million. But Dr. Hutcherson says that 1 – 2 percent of all fraternal twins have different fathers. In one case, a white woman slept with both a black man and a white one and had twins of different races.
So, maybe this says that you want to clean yourself out after sleeping with a man to ensure that extra eggs don’t become fertilized by sperm that’s just “hanging around inside your v@gina.” You might also want to sleep with just one person, but that part is up to you.
