Former Bush Admin. Official and CIA Analyst Says Evidence against Syria is Fabricated

Ray McGovern, a veteran CIA analyst, has been sharing information with the public that is of grave concern to those who are not in support of US military intervention in Syria.   McGovern was among a group of veteran intelligence analysts who wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, warning him that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is not the one responsible for the recent chemical attacks that took place in the country.

In fact, McGovern is stating that “CIA Director John Brennan is perpetrating a pre-Iraq-War-type fraud on members of Congress, the media, [and] the public.”

McGovern says that the mainstream media in the US has not been helpful in sharing what he believes to be the truth in the matter.

“Well, the problem of course is getting into what they call the mainstream media. The media is drumbeating for the war just as before Iraq. And they don’t want to hear that the evidence is very very flimsy. They don’t want to hear that people within the CIA – senior people, with great access to this information – assure us, the veterans, that there’s no conclusive evidence that Assad ordered those chemical incidents on August 21. They don’t want to hear that.”

McGovern says that he believes that the chemical attacks were indeed taken out by Syrian opposition in order to provoke the United States into a war against the country.   But McGovern says that US political leaders, such as Secretary of State John Kerry don’t want the evidence to be released to the public because they don’t believe that it would stand up to public scrutiny.   He says that when Reagan attacked Libya in 1986, the president released the intercepted messages to the public to make his case.  He says that Obama should follow Reagan’s lead if he wants to ensure credibility.

“That’s what Obama has to do now. We’re very suspicious that if he’s unwilling to do that, since he sends his Chief of Staff before the camera and says: ‘Well, it wouldn’t stand up in a court of law, but, hey, intelligence is intelligence – you got to trust this. But we’re not going to trust him this time, especially when the head of the intelligence establishment is a self-admitted perjurer’.”

McGovern gives his own analysis of why the Israelis are the primary beneficiaries of an attack on Syria, since it would prolong the civil war in the country and protect the Israelis from further aggression.

“The only state, the only country that it profits is Israel. As long as, there’s an unending… looks like it’s going to be a 30-year war in Syria, a Shia against Sunni contest, not only in Syria, but in the whole Middle East area, now that Israel feels that the Sunni and the Shia aren’t going to be turning their swords and their guns on Israel. It’s that simple. Now, [US Secretary of State] John Kerry has amply demonstrated that he’s under the influence of [Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin] Netanyahu.

  1. Israel better be careful because if the U.S. attacks Syria I see the Shia and Sunni’s banding together to take out Israel once and for all…then maybe making peace between themselves or fighting each
other to the last man. Either way it is not in the U.S. or Israel
best interest as a Crusade facing a Holy War of Muslim nations aimed
at them, I see the writing in the sand.

  2. I felt that in my intuition that President Obama was being duped into this war.
He should now realize that by any means necessary the government is trying to discredit him and make him look incompetent. Is he so naive and trusting those surrounding him that he doesn’t get it? The white house is rife with people whom hate he’s there! He really should trust his own instincts.

    • Since you cant remember , read your damn history Ann! McGovern was and remains an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. He publicly attacked Rumsfield to his lying ass face while surrounded by a room full of Tea Party types. Youtube if you can turn off reality tv long enough. He wrote Op-Eds and articles critical of the Iraq War printed and read all over the world during the build up, during the fighting, and after. My question is: How the hell do you NOT know this? Standing on a platform of ignorance you GUESS that he was pro-war? Wake up and read a damn book, or newspaper or two.

  7. This is a liar, and still is not trustworthy. At least the investigation being done on Syria has more credibility than the Bush/Cheney admin.

Just think to ask what makes him noteworthy for any comments for the fact that since Reagan the GOP have lived and worked in the best interest of the 1-2% controlling folks. The GOP, Enron, Halliburton, Koch brothers (they want to buy into Apple now), and others cared less about anything except lying.

Syria “Expert” Cited by Kerry, McCain Fired for Lying about Academic Credentials
    September 12, 2013

Think tank that employed Elizabeth O’Bagy fires analyst who made case that Syrian opposition was more moderate

Foreign policy analyst Elizabeth O’Bagy appeared on numerous media outlets and was cited by high-level officials, but both her objectivity and credibility have been put into grave question. (Image: Fox News screenshot)A foreign policy analayst repeatedly cited by U.S. government officials—including Secretary of State John Kerry in testimony before Congress last week—has been fired after the think tank where she has been working discovered she was lying about her academic credentials.

Elizabeth O’Bagy, who has been cited as an expert on Syria by numerous media outlets, was employed by the Institute for Study of War in Washington D.C., but has been terminated after it was discovered she did not hold a doctorate from Georgetown University as she had claimed.

“The Institute for the Study of War has learned and confirmed that, contrary to her representations, Ms. Elizabeth O’Bagy does not in fact have a Ph.D. degree from Georgetown University,” the think tank announced in a statement. “ISW has accordingly terminated Ms. O’Bagy’s employment, effective immediately.”

O’Bagy’s expertise on the rebel forces aligned against President Bashar al-Assad was used to bolster arguments by those calling for U.S. intervention by painting a picture that the moderate elements within the opposition were in the ascendent over more extreme militias, such as the Al Nusra Front which has pledged allegiance to al Qaida.

Her objectivity, however, was questioned even before these new revelations about her academic background surfaced.

    As McClatchy reports:

O’Bagy’s termination followed a controversy that erupted last week when it emerged that in addition to being an institute analyst, she worked for the Syrian Emergency Task Force, a non-profit group that lobbies for U.S. support for Syrian rebel forces.

The controversy arose after an opinion piece she wrote for the Wall Street Journal said that, contrary to news reports, the Syrian opposition isn’t dominated by al Qaida-linked groups. Moderate groups, she wrote, have made significant gains in some areas and deserve outside military aid. The assertions were greeted with skepticism by other Syria experts.

The article identified her only by her institute affiliation, but the Journal later acknowledged that she also was the task force’s political director. The Journal described the group as providing “aid to the Syrian opposition” under contracts with the U.S. and British governments.

Kerry and McCain, R-Ariz., cited O’Bagy’s piece during congressional hearings last week in response to questions about whether missile strikes on Syria might empower al Qaida-affiliated fighters in the rebel movement.
