Is Donald Sterling racist? Yes. Now what? Fine him? The team makes $15 million a year for him. I doubt a $2.5 million fine will really hurt his feelings all that much. This is deeper than punishing one man for the way he feels about a group of people. Racism is more than one person not liking another person because of the color of her skin. That’s plain old prejudice or bigotry. Racism is bigotry with the power to do something about it. That’s why people like Donald Sterling are so dangerous. Because when they don’t like somebody or a group of people, they actually have the resources and power to affect their lives (e.g. housing and employment discrimination). You can dislike me all you want, but when your hate interferes with my community’s well-being then we have a problem.
